Floor Insulation

Warmer feet, lower bills — floor insulation done properly.

If you live in a Victorian or older home around Leeds, Wakefield or West Yorkshire, your ground floor is probably losing heat straight into the void beneath the boards. We lift the original floorboards, insulate between the joists, and relay them so the room looks the same — but feels completely different.

  • Stops cold draughts rising from below
  • Cuts ground-floor heat loss by up to 30%
  • Original boards lifted and re-laid
  • Can be combined with acoustic underlay

Based in Rothwell (LS26) · serving Leeds, Wakefield, Oulton, Woodlesford, Methley & Carlton.

Why suspended timber floors are so cold

Older homes were built with timber ground floors suspended over a ventilated under-floor void. The idea was to stop damp, but it also creates a direct path for cold outdoor air to flow beneath your feet. Even with thick carpets, a suspended floor can account for 10–15% of total heat loss in a home — and the cold draught makes rooms feel colder than the thermostat suggests.

  • Cold air drawn in through external vents
  • Floorboards act like a leaky radiator in reverse
  • Original homes rarely had any sub-floor insulation
  • Heat escapes into the ventilated void year-round

How we insulate a suspended timber floor

We carefully lift the original boards, fix a breathable membrane to the underside of the joists, and install rigid EPS or high-density mineral wool between them. Boards are then relayed, gaps filled where appropriate, and the finish left ready for sanding or flooring. Where acoustic performance is also needed, we add resilient underlay and battens before relaying the boards.

The result: warmer, quieter, cheaper-to-heat rooms

Customers typically notice the difference immediately — floors feel warmer underfoot, rooms heat up faster, and the thermostat can be set lower for the same comfort. Combined with loft insulation and IWI, floor insulation completes the thermal envelope of a solid-wall home.
