How acoustic insulation actually works

Effective soundproofing always combines two things: mass (to block airborne sound) and isolation (to stop vibration travelling through the structure). Acoustic plasterboard, mineral wool and mass-loaded vinyl add mass; resilient bars, acoustic hangers and floating floor systems add isolation. We design the build-up to the noise problem — never the other way around.

  • Acoustic mineral wool (60–80kg/m³)
  • Acoustic plasterboard (15–19mm, double-layer)
  • Resilient bars / acoustic hangers
  • Mass-loaded vinyl & green-glue damping layers

Party walls, ceilings and floors — typical solutions

For party walls in Victorian and inter-war terraces around Leeds and Rothwell we usually build an independent stud wall just off the existing brick, packed with high-density acoustic mineral wool and finished in two layers of acoustic plasterboard. For ceilings under noisy upstairs neighbours, a resilient-bar system with two layers of acoustic board gives an excellent step-change. For floors above bedrooms in converted flats, we fit acoustic underlays and battens to break the impact path.

What you actually feel in the room afterwards

Customers consistently describe a treated room as 'calmer', 'less echoey', and 'much further away' from the source noise. Voices and TV usually drop from clearly intelligible to a muffled background. Bass and low-frequency music are the hardest to control — we'll always be honest at survey about what's realistic for your specific noise problem.
