Soundproofing a home office in Wakefield — what works, what doesn't

Working from home and tired of every Teams call picking up the kids, the dog or the road outside? Here's the realistic spec for soundproofing a home office in a typical Yorkshire home.

Soundproofed home office in a Wakefield property

Home office soundproofing has been our fastest-growing job category since 2023. People want clean Teams calls, focused thinking time, and privacy from the rest of the house. Here's what actually works in a typical West Yorkshire 3-bed.

Decide what you're solving first

Home office acoustic problems split into two: noise getting IN (kids, TV, road, neighbour) and noise getting OUT (your voice on calls, music). Most projects need both, but the spec changes depending on which dominates. We always survey before quoting.

The realistic full-spec build

  • Walls treated with independent stud + acoustic mineral wool + double acoustic plasterboard
  • Resilient-bar isolated ceiling above (if there's a noisy room or loft over the office)
  • Acoustic-rated solid-core door with drop-seal and acoustic threshold
  • Window upgrade to secondary glazing if road noise is a factor
  • All sockets, switches and service penetrations sealed acoustically

What it costs (typical 12 m² home office)

Full walls + ceiling + door upgrade in a typical Wakefield 3-bed room comes in around £3,800–£6,500 supplied and fitted. Single-wall treatments (e.g. just the wall facing the noisy lounge) can start from £1,800.

What doesn't work

Foam tiles on the wall absorb echo inside the room but do almost nothing to stop sound coming in or out. They're a treatment for podcast acoustics, not noise reduction. Same goes for thick curtains and 'soundproof' paint — neither has any meaningful mass.
